The Beggar in Us

There is no merit in the renunciation of a beggar. If a person who has, gives up, there is merit in that. We know how often in our lives through laziness and cowardice we give up the battle and try to hypnotise our minds into the belief that we are brave.
-- Swami Vivekananda.
If there's an opportunity, we do not hesitate to tell others what to do. Here - take this formula of happiness! Forgive others. Meditate. Be compassionate. Be at peace with yourself.

Like Vivekananda said, unless you have something, you cannot give it. A beggar has nothing to renunciate and his talks of renunciation have no meaning. Think about it and it really becomes clear - we are all beggars. We have nothing, but we want to give others what we do not have. You are not happy, then how can you make others happy? You are not at peace, you are not calm, and you ask others to calm down. You want others to forgive, but have you forgiven anyone? You preach compassion - but do you eat meat? You want others to believe in God, but do you? I mean, do you in true sense? Have you seen God? Have you felt that inner peace that you claim to exist?

Look around. This is happening everywhere. A leader giving a fiery speech at the top of his voice - saying things he has no clue about. A monk preaching of God that he hasn't himself realized. A general trying to boost morale of his soldiers for a war that he doesn't believe in. All fakes. Sooner or later people find out. Whether you are true or fake, people find out.

Story of Buddha and Angulimala is relevant here. As soon as Angulimala, the most notorious murderer of his time, who wore the garland of his victim's fingers, saw Buddha - he knew something was different about Him. The peace. Buddha did not need a thousand words to convince him to give up the wrong path and this Angulimala went on to became one of the noted disciples of Buddha.

So, before we start our mission to help others - we need to help ourselves. With so much confusion in our own mind, with so much anger, and feeling of insecurity - we cannot help anyone. You cannot make anyone happy. You need to be first, then you can make. Be and make - the words of Vivekananda again. Sun doesn't need to prove anyone I am the Sun. Words are not required to prove anything.
